Original Abstract

In this article we study the effects of roughness on the measured reduced Young's modulus. A systematic study using 3D FEA modeling to map the apparent modulus on a real rough surface as measured by AFM is presented. The possibility to use a simplified Hertzian model based on the local curvature is explored. Experimental results are compared to the results of modeling.
