Original Abstract

This contribution presents an overview in a topic of aluminium-ion batteries which have recently attracted attention. The abundant raw materials and good electrochemical performance of newly discovered approaches are the main motivation. In this work we bring and some historical highlights as well as the contemporary state of the art on suitable cathode materials and electrolytes for aluminium-ion cell technology. The concept of aluminium-ion batteries was introduced in the early 1970s but the really first mention of using aluminium for energy storage comes from the pioneering work of Hulot in 1855 however unnoticed for long time. The resurrection of interest in aluminium ion technology comes mainly with the utilization of ionic liquids as electrolytes and with the preparation of various graphene-derived electrode materials.
