Original Abstract

A combination of acrylic resins and microcrystalline waxes are commonly used for preservation and conservation of metallic archaeological artefacts. Nowadays, novel, more efficient polymers may be considered for alternative conservation methods. The usage of barrier films for this purpose appears promising. Based on our previous research, parylene (poly-p-xylylene) polymer was chosen as a suitable candidate thanks to its excellent barrier properties, transparency and formation of conformal coating without defects. The soluble interlayer made from the lacquer Laksil was applied between metal and parylene film to ensure removability of coating. The physical and chemical characteristics of bilayer were determined using the profilometry, SEM, colouristic measurements and standard corrosion tests. The removal efficiency of protective bilayer was evaluated by EDX and TGA analysis and almost full removal was confirmed. The barrier properties of the coating were much better in comparison with conventional conservation coating.
