For a correct representation of the ballastmaterial behaviour in discrete element method (DEM) it is necessary to take into account crushing of grains. The representation of crushing phenomenom is based on the replacement of the original grain by a clump of 4, 6 or 14 spheres. The replacement occurs when the equivalent stress exceedsthe size dependent material strength.
