Original Abstract

The contribution is focused on the matter of long-pitch corrugation. The rails are throughout the lifetime damaged by traffic and tend to worn out. The traffic causes a shorter life of the rails, greater maintenance costs and consequently the track possessions. The long-pitch corrugation, like other defects of the rail surface, reduces comfort for passengers and increases the noise and vibration pollution in the track neighborhood. Therefore it is very important to understand the development of the long-pitch corrugation. The article brings the basic introduction into the theory of the formation of the long-pitch corrugation as well as some monitoring and measurement experience gained on the test track sections.
