Original Abstract

Semi-solid or mushy state processing permits a material to partially solidify before shape making operations. The understanding of material behaviour in the mushy state is critical for better control of various semi-solid processes. The aim of the present study is to experimentally quantify the deformation behaviour of carbon steel in mushy states. Semi-solid specimens under upsetting deformation were evaluated at various forming rates. The temperature of specimens was carefully controlled to keep the solid fraction constant. Based on the experiments, material parameters of the Perzyna constitutive model are identified. Good correlation between simulated and measured results of the compression force was observed.
