The journey to a lecture, laboratory or workplace can be quick, easy and emission-free. Brno University of Technology is joining forces with nextbike and expanding the network of shared bike stations directly on the university campus. BUT students and employees will also benefit from special conditions for using the service.BUT is expanding its partnership with nextbike. | Author: Václav ŠirokýPromoting cycling and other forms of active and zero-emission transport is part of BUT’s broader approach to sustainable mobility. The university is not only monitoring the impact of transport on its carbon footprint, but also the accessibility of its individual campuses and the quality of students’ and employees’ daily journeys. The new partnership with nextbike is another step towards making cycling an easier choice for everyday journeys around Brno.
The partnership includes the construction of four new nextbike stations on the Technická campus. Bikes can now be rented and returned directly at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technologies, the Faculty of Business and Management, and the Halls of Residence Pod Palackého vrchem. The network is complemented by existing or nearby stations at other VUT faculties and facilities. It's always best to check the current bike availability and the exact locations of all official stations directly in the app.
When registering for the first time with a university email address, BUT students and employees will receive a one-time ride credit of CZK 150. Students can also take advantage of a discounted monthly subscription for CZK 149. To qualify for this price, they need to verify the validity of their ISIC card in the app under Subscriptions/Partner Benefits and then purchase the subscription. And there is good news for shorter journeys around Brno, a subscription may not even be necessary. Thanks to the support of the City of Brno, two rides of up to 30 minutes per day are currently free. Once this benefit has been used or for longer rides, the current price list charges CZK 35 for every additional 30 minutes, up to a maximum of CZK 500 per 24 hours.
The entire process can be completed via the mobile app. Simply download the nextbike app, create an account and use your university email address when registering. To activate the account, you need to add a payment card and make a verification payment of CZK 50. You will not lose this amount – it is automatically converted into ride credit. Then simply find a bike, select “Rent a bike” in the app, scan the QR code on the frame and confirm the rental. The lock will automatically unlock and you can set off. The same process is also outlined in the information material prepared for the new BUT and nextbike partnership.Bike rentals are handled through a simple mobile app. | Author: Václav ŠirokýWhere should you return the bike? There is one important rule to remember – the bike must be returned to an official nextbike station shown on the map in the app. Nextbike stations may not be the same as stations operated by other bike-sharing companies or regular bike racks. When returning a bike, always follow the current map in the app. Once you arrive at a station, simply park the bike and press down the lock lever above the rear wheel. This will end the rental. It is always a good idea to check in the app that the ride has actually ended. If it has not, contact customer support directly through the app or by phone.
