Are you planning to stay in Brno for more than three months? If so, you are legally required to pay the municipal waste fee, just like citizens of the Czech Republic. This obligation applies to all foreign nationals, including citizens of Ukraine, regardless of nationality or type of residence permit.
If you are renting an apartment, please note that the responsibility to pay the waste fee lies with you, not with the landlord or property owner.
Although waste fees may seem like a minor administrative matter, failure to pay can lead to unnecessary complications, including debts and penalties. Below you will find a clear overview of how the waste payment system works in Brno, including registration, payment options, and important obligations.
The most convenient way to register and pay the municipal waste fee is online via the Brno iD portal.
Each person must register individually, as the waste fee in Brno is paid per person, not per household. Certain groups are exempt from payment, such as children under four years of age and seniors over 70.
Once registered, you can pay:
directly through the Brno iD e-shop, or
by bank transfer.
If you have a Czech personal identification number (rodné číslo), please use it as the variable symbol when making the payment (do not use the number provided by your health insurance company).

If you own an additional apartment or house in Brno where no one is registered, you are also required to pay the waste fee for that property.
Fee amount: 900 CZK per person
Payment deadline: 31 May 2026
Payments can be made from January to May, and you may split the payment into instalments according to your preferences.
Exemptions remain unchanged and apply under the same conditions as in previous years.
Although the waste fee is paid per person and is not linked to a specific address, any change of address must be reported.
Simply send an email (English is acceptable) to: 📧 odpady@brno.cz and include your new address.
Before leaving Brno, it is essential to deregister; otherwise, the authorities will assume that your obligation to pay continues, which may result in debt.
Deregistration must be completed within 15 days of departure.
You can do this by filling in the relevant online form.
If you have overpaid, you may request a refund.
If you arranged your residence permit through the relevant authorities, make sure to also cancel your residence registration. Otherwise, your residence — and the obligation to pay the waste fee — may still be considered valid.
Waste sorting is mandatory in Brno and widely practiced. In addition to paper, glass, and plastic, you can recycle a wide range of items, including clothes, toys, electronics, and more.
Old medicines can be returned to any pharmacy for safe disposal.
A dedicated application will help you locate the nearest recycling points across the city.
