VUT joins Czech Association for Artificial Intelligence

Brno University of Technology joined the largest professional platform developing AI in the Czech Republic on 22 January. The membership of BUT in the Czech Association of Artificial Intelligence (ČAUI) was officially confirmed by the signatures of BUT Vice-Rector Martin Weiter and the association’s director Lukáš Benzl.

The main motivations behind the Brno University of Technology joining the association with more than 400 members include sharing information, discussion and networking with key domestic stakeholders in the field of artificial intelligence from academia, the private sector and public administration.

“Artificial intelligence is radically transforming human society. It is therefore important to discuss both the opportunities and the challenges this change brings, and to do so with partners who have practical experience in using AI tools across various areas of human activity. By joining the association, BUT is strengthening its competencies in the use of AI, which it already successfully develops in many areas of science and research,” said Martin Weiter, Vice-Rector of BUT for Research and Knowledge Transfer, at the signing of the accession agreement.

The Czech Association of Artificial Intelligence (ČAUI) was established in 2023. This professional platform brings together more than 400 companies, universities and public institutions with the aim of developing responsible and practical use of AI in the Czech Republic, supporting education, standard-setting and the implementation of the EU AI Act into practice. Representatives of ČAUI are among the permanent members of the AI Committee, established to implement the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Czech Republic 2030 at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Each year, the association organises the Zážeh conference, this year focused on AI ambitions.

“Membership in the association primarily brings BUT fast and effective connections with partners from industry and public administration for the purpose of sharing expertise, for example in the area of administrative processes. Another important benefit is the opportunity to be involved at the source of legislative and regulatory changes in artificial intelligence. Participation in specialised working groups focused on education, healthcare and other areas is also highly valuable,” explained Petr Koňas, AI Ambassador of BUT.

“I am convinced that cooperation between BUT and ČAUI will strengthen the connection between academia and real-world practice. BUT is one of the key institutions and, for me personally, a synonym for top-level AI research. It covers areas ranging from language models and machine learning to participation in projects such as the Czech AI Factory. Together, we will contribute to the strategic development of artificial intelligence in the Czech Republic,” concluded Lukáš Benzl, Director of the Czech Association of Artificial Intelligence.

AI at BUT in Research and Practice

  • BUT is part of the Czech AI Factory consortium, which is building a Czech supercomputer;
  • AI and machine learning applied to speech data mining are a major part of research at BUT’s Faculty of Information Technology, with practical impacts in cybersecurity;
  • CEITEC BUT has state-of-the-art infrastructure for testing AI solutions for industry;
  • AI is also applied at BUT in energy systems, waste management, automotive and semiconductor industries, or defence technologies;
  • The AI@BUT portal offers courses and training and connects AI-related activities across the university.
