Scientist, Architect and Science Communicator. SMR Awards Also Went to BUT

From protecting the landscape against drought and popularising science to promoting the good name of the region. The South Moravian Region Awards for 2025 recognised individuals whose ideas, research, and determination are helping shape the society around them. Brno University of Technology also left a strong mark among this year’s twelve laureates, with its representatives receiving three awards. The ceremonial presentation took place on Tuesday in the Milosrdní bratři Hall in Brno.

This year, the awards were dominated by figures from science and research. One of the recipients in this category was water management expert Miroslav Dumbrovský from the BUT Faculty of Civil Engineering, who has long focused on water retention in the landscape, soil erosion protection, and the adaptation of agricultural systems. His research brings practical solutions for sustainable land management and helps address the increasingly frequent impacts of climate change. Alongside his scientific work, he is also dedicated to educating a new generation of specialists in landscape water management.

Another recipient in the same category was chemist and science communicator Tomáš Opravil from the BUT Faculty of Chemistry, who has been involved in the popularisation of science and technical fields since his student years. He is among the founders of the Science Festival, contributed to the involvement of Brno University of Technology in the nationwide Researchers’ Night event, and during the pandemic coordinated the university’s production of disinfectants and protective face shields for regional institutions. Through entertaining science shows, workshops, and outreach programmes, he has for many years been bringing chemistry and natural sciences closer to children, students, and the wider public. In his approach, science popularisation is not only a tool for education, but also a means of inspiring and motivating people to study natural and technical sciences and to perceive science positively within society.

The third university laureate is architect Svatopluk Sládeček from the BUT Faculty of Architecture, who received an award for contributing to the reputation and good name of the South Moravian Region. An architecture lecturer and founder of the New Work studio, he is known for his original buildings that work sensitively with space, landscape, and historical surroundings. He is also a prominent figure in the field of so-called figurative architecture, a style that emphasises form, spatial counterpoint, and at times symbolic figurativeness. He has received numerous honours and awards in architectural competitions and has had a tangible influence on the development of the architectural environment in the South Moravian region.

Alongside personalities connected with BUT, the region also recognised other outstanding figures from science, sport, and culture. Award recipients included expert in research into the biological effects of chemical substances Klára Hilscherová, biomedical specialist Ondřej Slabý, space engineer Simon Klinga, founder of a children’s hospice Radka Vernerová, and hockey legend Libor Zábranský. A special in memoriam award was also presented to Barbora Bühnová, co-founder of the Czechitas organisation and a major figure in Czech IT education, who supported digital education and opened the world of information technology to thousands of girls and women.

The South Moravian Region Award is presented to individuals whose work, actions, or lifelong dedication significantly contribute to the development of the region. Once again this year, the awards highlighted the strong foundation that South Moravia has in science, education, innovation, and civic engagement.

The text is based on a press release issued by the South Moravian Region.
