Interested in topics shaping what’s happening at Brno University of Technology? Tune in to the new episode of the internal podcast VUT's up?, which brings you insights into key issues and behind-the-scenes perspectives at the university through interviews. This time, we talk about visions for BUT, the rector’s hobbies, and experiences from Antarctica. The next guest on the "VUT's up?" podcast is the rector of BUT. | Author: archive of Ladislav Janíček Today’s guest is the highest representative of BUT – Rector Ladislav Janíček. In the second part of the podcast, he presents his vision for the university, aiming for BUT to become a visible and respected technical university in Europe by 2030. The discussion gradually shifts to a more personal level, where he shares his passion for music and reading science fiction, as well as his experiences from repeated expeditions to Antarctica. He vividly describes the extreme conditions of demanding voyages and the inspiration he draws from the story of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. According to him, staying in such a harsh environment strengthens resilience, teamwork, and a sense of personal responsibility – qualities he also applies in his professional life and in leading the university. “The reason I travel to Antarctica, aside from having a planned program, is that from time to time I need to prove to myself that I can still handle emergency conditions. It is undoubtedly a journey that, besides being dramatic, is also about living in less-than-comfortable conditions. I somehow still need to reassure myself that I am capable of handling challenges,” explains the rector.
