Physicist Andrea Konečná receives award from Czech Learned Society

Andrea Konečná from CEITEC BUT and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering BUT received the Learned Society of the Czech Republic Award in the Young Scientist category. At its 32nd General Assembly held on 11 May 2026, the Learned Society of the Czech Republic awarded medals for contributions to the advancement of science and presented prizes to distinguished scientists, educators, and talented secondary school and university students.

Andrea Konečná leads the Advanced Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy research group. Her work combines electron microscopy, spectroscopy, solid-state physics, and optical science. She focuses on the interaction of fast electrons with optical fields, shaping electron beams, and developing light-controlled electron optics. According to the Learned Society, her research opens the way to a new generation of electron microscopes as well as new imaging and spectroscopic methods.

Konečná’s research has recently been supported by two major grants – the Junior Star grant from the Czech Science Foundation and the ERC-CZ grant from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Andrea Konečná first gained recognition during her doctoral studies in San Sebastián, Spain, and later during her work in Barcelona, where she published papers in prestigious scientific journals and established international collaborations. Alongside her research, she is also involved in teaching and supervising students at the Institute of Physical Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

“I am very pleased that the Learned Society of the Czech Republic appreciated the results of my scientific work, and I greatly value this award for young scientists. At the same time, I see this recognition as not belonging only to me, because I certainly did not achieve these results alone – the award also belongs to my supervisors, collaborators, and, last but not least, the talented students and members of my team with whom I have had and continue to have the honour to work. None of this would have been possible without the support of my former and current institutions and my family,” commented Andrea Konečná on her success.
