Microworld for everyone: BUT joins the Days of Electron Microscopy

Brno will once again open the door to the nanoworld. Fascinating structures – this year featuring the bacterium E. coli – will be presented at the Days of Electron Microscopy festival, taking place from 23 to 29 March. Experts from Brno University of Technology will traditionally join the programme, giving visitors the opportunity to take a closer look at the world of nanotechnologies, the background of research, and clean laboratory environments.

Brno has long been considered a global centre of electron microscopy. It is here that instruments are developed which are used by leading scientific institutions around the world, with universities, research organisations and technology companies collaborating on their development. The Days of Electron Microscopy will therefore offer lectures, excursions and interactive programmes to introduce this unique world pushing the boundaries of human knowledge to schools, families and the general public.

How will experts from BUT present electron microscopy?

Experts from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and CEITEC BUT will show visitors how scientists use electron microscopes to study the structure of materials and how these findings influence their properties and practical applications. For primary and secondary schools they have prepared an introduction to electron microscopy, where students will learn how microscopes work, where they are used, and why they are so important for modern science and industry.

The entertaining science show Experience Science First-Hand will present physical phenomena in a playful and interactive way. Participants can look forward to experiments with liquid nitrogen, demonstrations from the fields of hydrodynamics, vacuum and light, as well as other fascinating topics. In addition, a popular science lecture by Jiří Spousta will explain how electron microscopes work and demonstrate the possibilities this technology offers today in science and industry.

Scientists from CEITEC BUT will also look beneath the surface of things together with visitors, using microscopes to reveal details that normally remain hidden to the human eye. They will also prepare a programme for those interested in doctoral studies and present the Helios dual-beam microscope, which combines an electron and ion beam for advanced imaging and material modification.

Visitors can also sign up for a tour of the clean laboratories at CEITEC BUT, showing how research is conducted in laboratory spaces cleaner than an operating theatre.

For the first time, experts from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and the Czech Semiconductor Centre (CSC) will also join the programme. Together with visitors they will explore the microworld and demonstrate hands-on work with an electron microscope. Participants will see a nanofibre up to 1,000 times thinner than a human hair or a damaged silver contact on the surface of a solar cell.

In addition, visitors can attend a talk about chips and semiconductors, where they will learn what a semiconductor is, how a chip is created and why an electron microscope cannot be manufactured without it. All this will be clearly explained by Jana Drbohlavová, Deputy Director of the CSC, together with Martin Balabán from the student association SPICE.

The full programme of the Days of Electron Microscopy is available on the festival website.
