Earth Day annually highlights the importance of protecting our planet and seeking sustainable solutions for its future. These challenges are also addressed by experts from Brno University of Technology, who, together with representatives of Lipka and other Brno-based institutions, will take part in a Saturday Earth Day event in the park at Kraví hora. This year, Earth Day will shine a spotlight on light as a resource and its impact on humans, plants, and animals. | Author: Václav KoníčekAs part of the programme subtitled Let’s Shed Some Light on It!, university experts will present their projects and offer the public a wide range of activities connecting science, technology and ecology. Visitors will discover both the bright and dark sides of light, try out fun experiments for children and adults, and explore interactive stations with hands-on demonstrations.
The main theme of Brno’s Earth Day is light and its impact on people and the environment. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication will present the programme Save Mrs Darkness, which introduces the issue of light pollution. Visitors will learn why it is important to protect natural darkness and how well-designed lighting can benefit cities and the landscape. Using a luminance analyser, they will also view colour brightness maps and discover how the amount, direction and contrast of light affect the environment around us. Selected images can even be printed on site and taken home.Ilustrative photo. | Author: Václav KoníčekThe Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will follow up on the theme of light with the programme Secrets of Light, where visitors can try experiments with refraction, colour, and the passage of light through different materials. Here, light will serve as a tool for solving puzzles and discovering its lesser-known properties. Visitors will see that even an ordinary bottle may not be as opaque as it seems, and that changing the angle or colour of light can completely transform what we see.
Did you know that up to 70 million batteries end up in landfills every day? Experts from the Faculty of Information Technology will demonstrate how energy can be saved using sunlight. Visitors will discover how devices can harvest energy from their surroundings and how this approach could reduce the need for battery replacement in the future, and they will try the principles of so-called energy harvesting firsthand.Energy storage from light will also be presented by the student team strojLAB Lizard Engineers, who will showcase simple devices capable of capturing and using this energy.
How many windows are too many? The Faculty of Civil Engineering and the student organisation ARC Siola will introduce visitors to the importance of natural lighting in architecture, and attendees will be able to try designing buildings with regard to orientation and indoor environmental quality.Scientists from the Faculty of Chemistry will offer an insight into the world of fluorescence. They will demonstrate how this phenomenon works, where it is used in practice, and why some substances glow differently under light than expected. The programme will also include a fun puzzle that can be solved using various fluorescent materials. The role of modern technologies in ecology will also be presented by the MechLab laboratory. Visitors will learn how the integration of software and hardware contributes to more efficient use of energy, materials and time, and how it can lead to more environmentally friendly operation of machines and entire systems. In practice, this means not only cost savings but also a more sustainable approach to the environment.
The programme presented by Brno University of Technology will show that environmental protection is not only a matter for individuals, but also for scientific teams, innovation and technological progress. Visitors of all ages will gain new knowledge, an interest in technical solutions, and inspiration on how to contribute to a more sustainable future. In addition to the BUT exhibition, they can also look forward to concerts, theatre performances, or a panel discussion, and an inflatable model of the Sun or a giant CO2 cube will also be on display at Kraví hora.Details about the event and the full programme are available on the website.
