Department of Spatial Design at FA BUT has become a partner of Brno Living Lab

Connecting research, societal needs, and collaboration between universities, companies, and citizens – these are the core pillars on which the Brno Living Lab is built. At the end of last year, the initiative became a full member of the European Network of Living Labs. Since December, the Department of Spatial Design at the Faculty of Architecture BUT has also joined the platform as a partner, creating opportunities to explore new approaches to the design of public spaces in the city of Brno.

Representatives of Brno University of Technology also took part in the first meeting of the Brno Living Lab Regional Council, which was held at the end of February at the RECETOX centre at Masaryk University. The meeting primarily introduced the activities of the living lab, the services of its research infrastructure, and current regional projects.

The main topic of the discussion, in which both university and strategic partners shared their experience, including representatives of BVV Living Lab and CzechInvest, was the development of a regional platform supporting cooperation between research institutions, the public and private sectors, and citizens, particularly in the field of citizen science. Brno University of Technology was represented at the meeting by architects Jiří Palacký and Kateřina Dokoupilová, together with the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering BUT Jiří Hlinka.

“Within the framework of Brno Living Lab, we are eager to build on joint activities in the urban environment. We see great value in the interdisciplinary connection between research in sustainable urban planning and spatial diagnostics with the platform’s environmental data, which makes it possible to design solutions for resilient cities while also developing our Student Living Labs,” said Palacký.

Stronger collaboration between academia and the city opens new opportunities for experimenting with architecture and urban development in Brno and its surrounding areas. Within the laboratory, the Department of Spatial Design at FA BUT can transfer experience from teaching and research directly into practice while also involving its students in projects that respond to the current needs of the urban environment.

Brno Living Lab addresses global environmental challenges and contributes to improving the quality of life of citizens in Brno and its surrounding region. In cooperation with its partners, it develops smart technologies and innovative solutions that support the development of a sustainable society. At the end of last year, it became one of more than 200 active members of the global community of the European Network of Living Labs, which promotes open innovation and participatory research.
