The fifteenth edition of the prestigious nationwide Czech Transport Construction and Technology of the Year competition brought the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology two awards in the student category. Jakub Skočdopole received the BUT Rector’s Award for his design of an arch road bridge, while Adéla Karásková was presented with the Dean’s Award of the Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT for her design of an arch pedestrian bridge.The award-winning students received their diplomas and a cash prize. | Author: Czech Transportation ConstructionThe Czech Transport Construction and Technology of the Year competition is organised by the Association of Building Entrepreneurs under the patronage of the rectors of Czech universities. In the student category, the expert jury recognises innovative semester, bachelor’s, and master’s theses in the fields of transport and transport engineering. The aim is to encourage students’ interest in technical disciplines, strengthen links between academia and industry, and provide young professionals with valuable career contacts. During the gala evening held in the Fanta Hall of Prague Main Railway Station, a total of 17 students received awards, including two graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT.
The award-winning theses by students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT share one distinctive theme – the design of arch bridge structures. While Jakub Skočdopole designed a large road bridge spanning a deep valley, Adéla Karásková focused on the design of a pedestrian bridge in an urban environment. Both projects required not only expertise in structural design but also the ability to work with advanced computational methods and consider the entire life cycle of the structure – from geometric design to construction methods.Jakub Skočdopole received the BUT Rector’s Award for his master’s thesis entitled Arch Road Bridge. His project focused on spanning a deep valley using an arch bridge with a deck above the arch (where the roadway runs above the arch structure).Jakub developed two possible structural solutions before selecting one for detailed elaboration. His work included a study of the optimal arch geometry, structural analysis, and an assessment of the individual construction phases. He evaluated the structure in terms of both serviceability and load-bearing capacity in accordance with current standards. “I deliberately chose a relatively demanding thesis topic because I wanted it to prepare me well for professional practice,” explained Skočdopole. His success demonstrates that the easiest path rarely leads to exceptional results.The Dean’s Award of the Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT was presented to Adéla Karásková for her master’s thesis Arch Pedestrian Bridge in an Urban Environment. The project focused on a bridge structure in which the deck (the pedestrian walkway) is suspended from a steel arch using hangers. The objective was to design a structure that would be both safe and aesthetically elegant.Adéla Karásková accepted the award from SPS President Jiří Nouza. | Author: Czech Transportation ConstructionThe thesis included the creation of a detailed computational model used to verify how the bridge would behave under various loading conditions. This proved to be the most challenging part of the project for Adéla. “The project was quite demanding, but it gave me the opportunity to explore the design of more complex structures that I hope to work on professionally in the future,” Karásková said. She is already applying the knowledge she gained in her career. “I work for a company specialising in concrete bridges, and I would like to continue working in this field,” she added.The Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT places strong emphasis on connecting theory with practice. Success in this nationwide competition demonstrates that its students graduate with practical knowledge and experience, enabling them to meet the challenges of technically demanding engineering tasks. The awards in the Czech Transport Construction and Technology of the Year 2025 competition therefore represent not only an important achievement for the students but also for the faculty itself.
