Czech Academic Games 2026 come to an end. BUT secures third place among universities and celebrates 40 medals

Six days full of sporting performances, emotions, and battles for academic titles are over. The 24th edition of the Czech Academic Games, hosted this year by Brno University of Technology (BUT), has concluded in Brno. The largest university sports event in the Czech Republic attracted nearly 1,800 athletes from universities and higher vocational schools across the country, who competed in 21 sports.

The organisation of this year’s edition was ensured by the BUT Centre of Sports Activities (CESA BUT), which was responsible for the preparation and execution of this major multisport event. The Czech Academic Games were held at BUT for the fifth time – it was here at Brno University of Technology that the very first edition took place in 2002, marking the beginning of this tradition. This year’s edition was also symbolic for the Centre of Sports Activities itself, as it celebrates 25 years since its establishment.

BUT’s home team performed excellently in the overall ranking of universities, securing 3rd place. BUT students won a total of 40 medals – 9 gold, 10 silver, and 21 bronze – and achieved 97 point-scoring placements, meaning positions from 1st to 6th place. In the overall ranking, only Masaryk University placed ahead of BUT in first place, followed by Charles University in second place.

“We are delighted that we were able to welcome the best university athletes from across the Czech Republic here at BUT. Many thanks go to all colleagues at CESA BUT and other organisers who contributed to the preparation and smooth running of the entire Games. We also congratulate all our students who represented BUT for their excellent sporting performances and results. Third place in the overall university ranking and 40 medals won are a strong confirmation that sport has a solid place at our university,” said Hana Lepková, Director of the BUT Centre of Sports Activities.

A total of 301 athletes represented BUT in individual disciplines and seven team competitions. BUT thus confirmed its strong sporting tradition and built on last year’s result from the Czech Academic Games, where it finished 5th with 37 medals.

The gold medals and titles of academic champions were won by:

  • athletics: Miroslava Hanzalíková (100 m, 200 m), women’s 4 × 100 m relay, and men’s 4 × 400 m relay,
  • karate: Bianka Suchá (kumite up to 55 kg),
  • paddleboarding: Ondřej Fukas (technical race),
  • finswimming: Radim Švarc (50 m BF),
  • fencing: Martin Slezák (foil) and Martin Kuráň (épée).

The Czech Academic Games are organised by the Czech Association of University Sports in cooperation with selected host universities. This year’s edition confirmed that university sport has a firm place at BUT. The achievements of BUT students, together with the successful organisation of the event led by CESA BUT, demonstrate that technical education, active student life, and sports representation can go hand in hand successfully.
