Zuza Golińska, Visiting Artists’ Studio lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts BUT during the Spring Semester 2025/2026, is exhibiting at Manifesta. The 16th edition of Manifesta runs until 4 October 2026 in Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum. Zuza Golińska’s work Swarm is installed in the Gethsemane Church in Bochum.Zuza Golińska – Swarm. | Author: Manifesta 16 Ruhr / Ivan ErofeevSwarm is a series of works based on Zuza Golińska’s research in the shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, a historically significant site where the artist has worked extensively. Using materials recovered from scrap heaps and in collaboration with local welders, she created a constellation of objects resembling extraterrestrial organisms. Within this metallic colony, some forms evoke hybrid beings – part insect, part combat drone. Others appear even more ominous: oxygen cylinders, simultaneously symbols of life and danger, also recall military weapons. The Swarm that Golińska has brought to life can be understood both as a collective formation of fantastical life forms and as a military concept – a coordinated attack system controlled by algorithmic intelligence. The remnants of the shipyard have undergone an irreversible transformation, giving rise to a new kind of being that raises the question of what industrial sites become once they lose their original purpose.Manifesta was founded in the early 1990s in response to the political, economic and social changes following the end of the Cold War and the subsequent processes of European integration. Since then, it has evolved into a nomadic platform dedicated to fostering dialogue between art and society across Europe.
