(Press Release, 30 March 2026) The BUT Faculty of Architecture warmly invites you to the international conference “Planning in a Time of Change,” which will take place on 10 April 2026 at the creative hub KUMST in Brno. The event is linked to the launch of new interdisciplinary study programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year and will focus on current topics such as sustainable urban development, climate change, participation, and strategic planning. The conference will offer meetings with leading international and Czech experts, a workshop for prospective students, and panel discussions on the above-mentioned topics. The conference “Planning in a Time of Change” will introduce new study programmes that reflect the growing need for an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to spatial planning. The newly accredited programmes were created in response to contemporary crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, exceeding planetary boundaries, increasing socio-economic and regional inequalities, the housing crisis, urbanisation, and regional depopulation.
The first programme in the new offer is Integrative Spatial Planning (IPP), which will prepare professionals capable of responding to the complex challenges of contemporary cities – from climate adaptation and affordable housing to the coordination of public policies. Graduates will be equipped with competencies for work in public administration, urban institutions, and international teams.
The second programme is the international Integrative Urban Studies (INUS), focused on addressing current challenges of urban development in a European and global context. It connects urbanism, spatial planning, social sciences, and public policy, and offers students a unique opportunity to study progressively in three European cities – Brno, Vilnius, and Wrocław. Thanks to its emphasis on linking theory with practice, students will gain experience with tools such as GIS, urban analytics, and participatory planning, and will engage in real projects in cooperation with cities, the non-profit sector, and the private sector. Graduates will have broad career opportunities in sustainable urban development, urban planning, public administration, research, or smart city innovation, while also building a strong international network of contacts.
The conference programme includes keynote lectures, a workshop, and two panel discussions focused on key issues in contemporary planning:
A key feature of the conference is its strong international dimension – the main keynote lectures will be delivered by Univ. Prof. Dipl.-Ing.in. Ute Schneider (TU Wien), Head of the Research Unit of Urban Design, and Prof. Dr. Jan Polívka (TU Berlin), Director of the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning. Other confirmed guests include Miodrag Kuč (ZK/U Berlin), Siarhei Liubimau (European Humanities University, Vilnius), Ladislava Zbiejczuk Suchá (KISK, Faculty of Arts, MU), Vojtěch Vomáčka (Faculty of Law, MU), Michal Kohout (FA CTU).
The event will be moderated by Monika Konrad (City of Warsaw / FA BUT) and Jan Malý Blažek (FA BUT).
The event will also include a problem-solving workshop, allowing especially prospective students to try out the principles of integrative spatial and urban planning in practice.
The conference is intended not only for applicants to the new programmes and professionals in the fields of urbanism, spatial planning, and territorial development. The BUT Faculty of Architecture invites representatives of local governments, planners, urbanists, city architects, academics, and other interested participants to engage in an open discussion, share experience, and foster collaboration on the needs of 21st-century planning.
